Will you eat the new GM salmon?
How will you know if you are eating this?
Do you think that you should have the right to know if you are eating genetically modified or engineered salmon?

Salmon is a popular fish to eat. It tastes good and provides significant health benefits. Salmon is a complete food providing a complete protein and fat source; both of the macronutrients every human needs to survive! (R1) But what about GM Salmon?

“Big Farma Fisheries”

The approval of the use of genetically modified fish for human consumption will not be based on science because quite simply it has never been tested on humans. Anyone who eats GM salmon will be a guinea pig. A consumer poll shows the majority of Canadians want all foods that are genetically modified to be labeled. (R2) 93% of the US public says the federal government should require these labels. (R3)

Your Canadian government is saying that you do not GET the right to know. I am not the only health care professional recommending that GM salmon should be considered unsafe until proven otherwise. All GM fish will be farmed. My thoughts are that the “Big Farma Fisheries” motive for GM farmed “Frankenfish” is faster, cheaper food production with a greater yield. One reason: PROFIT. Proper regard to the impact GM farmed fish will have on human health, the health of the fish, sustainability and the ecosystem cannot be predicted. It will all be one big experiment. Will “Big Farma Fisheries” be responsible for the environmental cleanup and the health costs for humans with disease if this is proven to be the result?

The US company Aquabounty found Canada’s government willing to quietly (no public feedback/input) allow PEI to be the world’s first GM-fish egg factory. Why not the US? These genetically engineered Atlantic salmon, trademarked as AquAdvantage® Salmon, have growth hormone genes spliced into them from the Pacific Chinook salmon. In addition, a genetic switch from the ocean pout, an eel-like creature that tolerates very cold water, keeps the growth gene active even in cold weather — unlike natural salmon. The resulting combination makes for year-round growth hormones in the salmon – Frankenfish, if you will – so that it grows much more rapidly than it would naturally. (R4)

The right type of fish is great for health; the wrong type can be devastating!

Why should one eat Omega 3 fats? They have been shown to help the health of your entire body because every cell needs omega 3 fats to make their cell membrane. Without a proper cell membrane made in part from Omega 3 fat, nutrients can’t come into a cell and waste products can’t leave the cell. This deficient cell membrane leads to malfunction, illness and disease. How does Omega 3 in our diet actually affect our organ and system function? In the gut, it can help prevent and/or heal leaky gut, irritable bowel, colitis, cancer and so on. In the brain, it helps prevent and/or heal ADHD, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and improved mental alertness. In the cardiovascular system, it helps prevent and/or heal heart disease and stroke and regulation of cholesterol.

Hormones and the immune system need Omega 3 Fats. It helps prevent and/or heal menstrual cramps, postpartum depression, hot flashes and postmenopausal osteoporosis. (R5) The list goes on….Omega 3’s are part of every cell in your body. If you don’t have enough Omega 3’s, your body uses other types of fats that it has. However, they do not work the same. What if you were making rice pudding but didn’t have enough rice? If you substitute for the rice, everyone would then ask, “What is this?”

One benefit of fat: Omega 3’s

As with most things, there is good and bad. One of the consequences of animal fat is that it stores toxins. That is the reason why I personally recommend only 2-4 servings of wild fish /week. Even wild salmon contains toxins like mercury. The idea is to get as much Omega 3 and as little toxins as possible. GM salmon by definition of being a farmed fish will have considerably more toxins because of:

  1. The food the farmed fish eat is toxic (not even close to a wild fish’s diet):
Ingredients: Poultry Meal, Fish Meal, Poultry Fat, Fish Oil, Whole Wheat, Soybean Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Feather Meal, Rapeseed (canola) Oil, A Vitamin Premix Containing: Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Inositol, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Nicotinic Acid, Ascorbyl Polyphosphate (Vit C), Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Vit K); A Mineral Premix containing: manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite; Vitamin E Supplement, DL Methionine, and Ehtoxyquin (Antioxidant). Canthaxanthin, Astaxanthin . (R6)

    Please Note:
    A) Antioxidants are used to colour the fish. Without these colourants, farmed salmon would be an unappealing grayish-white colour.
    B) The poultry, fish and other food that the farmed fish is eating has been fed GMO Corn and other food that is normally not in their diet and these grains have been sprayed with chemicals such as glyphosate which the WHO suspects is a hormone disruptor and probably causes cancer! (R7)
  2. Body composition.
The new GM Franken-fish salmon will have the genetics of two different fish and it’s feed will include a hormone cocktail. Add to this the fact that all farmed fish have more fat and less protein than their wild ancestors. Because they swim thousands of miles less in their lifetime (they are caged), they do not develop the same muscle mass and are much more fat. More fat, more toxins. Glyphosate and all other pesticide and herbicide residues that the fish consume are stored in their fat. Then of course when you eat it- it will be stored in yours! Would you really choose farmed salmon (including GM salmon) now that you know this if they were labeled side by side?
  3. Because they are caged, the salmon swim and intake their own feces and urine. More toxins.
  4. Because they don’t “exercise” the same, their overall health is not as good. For the fish, their ability to detoxify is decreased, thus making them more prone to sickness and disease. (R8) For us we are getting less protein per serving and I would presume the quality of the protein would be affected as a result of less exercise (no scientific proof for this- only logic).
  5. Antibiotics and other medications are toxins to humans and are given to the fish because the fish are prone to sickness such as sea lice.

Other concerns about GM salmon are that they will gain weight at 2-3 times the normal rate. Will this have an effect on their health? Only time will tell.

When these GM salmon escape into the wild, experts warn that they will mate with wild fish and we will lose natural wild salmon forever. How will that effect the ecosystem? (R9, R10, R11,R12)

Time for action!

If you have read this far, you are probably outraged like me that our government could willingly allow Canadians to be guinea pigs. Do we really want to take a chance on forever losing wild salmon? Where will this end? How many animals including humans are next to be GMO? Please join us to putting an end to GMO salmon and never allow our mad scientists from multinational corporations choose profit over changing our world for ever. Since the start of BIG PHARMA and BIG FARMA we are a culture of chemically bombarded people. Question is: Has human health and the health of our planet improved? The answer is obvious, let’s take action to take our health and planet back. Start today by signing the three petitions below. Email us if you want to know how you/we can do more.
